( Pączki)

well it was yesterday ,sorry i couldn't wish you anything wanda,as i was busy with trying how to make faworki,i see u wrote something about fat thursday,so i wish u ate a lot of pounchki, favorki, and more & more as u need more than me....

Fat Thursday,(InPolish Tłusty czwartek) is a traditional Polish and German feast marking the last Thursday before Lent and is associated with the celebration of Carnival. Because Lent is a time of fasting, the next opportunity to feast would not be until Easter.

It is similar to, but should not be confused with, the French festival of Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday"). Traditionally it is a day dedicated to eating, when people meet in their homes or cafés with their friends and relatives and eat large quantities of sweets, cakes and other meals forbidden during Lent.

Among the most popular all-national dishes served on that day are pounchki (pączki) fist-sized donuts filled with rose marmalade, and faworki, French dough fingers served with lots of powdered sugar.

In Italy, Giovedì Grasso (Fat Thursday) is also celebrated, but it is not very different from Martedì Grasso (Shrove Tuesday).

It is also similar to the Greek custom of Tsiknopempti (loosely translatable as "Barbecue Thursday"), which involves the massive consumption of charred meat in the evening of Thursday, ten days before the beginning of the Great Lent.

In Spain this celebration is called jueves lardero, and in Catalan-speaking areas, dijous gras.

Paczki's (Pounchki) Day; Delicious Food for Fat Thursday & Tomorrow Poles celebrate the time of a carnival with balls and dances. The culmination of a carnival is a last week before Ash Wednesday.

Poles do not organize street parades like people in Brazil or in New Orleans. I guess it is just too cold in winter. But they eat pounchki ( pounczki ) may to get a lot of energy...
Strictly speaking Thursday is a Pounchki day and Tuesday is a Sledziowka day.The Thursday before Ash Wednesday is celebrated as Fat Thursday - Tlusty Czwartek .
On this is the day when you forget about your diet and eat mountains of donuts (paczki) and all the other things fat, greasy, sweet, full of cholesterol, generally unhealthy, and mmmmm.... delicious.

The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is known as Herring Day called in Polish, Ostatki or Sledziowka. On this day you party as much as you can (the last day before the Lent) and traditionally, you eat a lot of herrings (yummy).

Ponnchki are like doughnuts for Americans. The name "pounchek" (paczek) comes from the shape of this Polish doughnut. Pounchek is round, fresh like a bud of a flower .
The plural from Polish "paczek" is "paczki". It should be pronounced "pounchki". Therefore many Polish communities have so called Pączki's (Pounchki) Days. The best pounchki are fresh from the Polish bakery. It is hard to obtain such dough quality (very soft) by doing it at home. The most famous are pounchki with the filling from rose marmalade. The marmalade is done from the crushed pellets or buds of roses with sugar. Only certain types of roses are suitable for it.

& since pounchkia were too difficult to prepare I've decided to try another delicious food much eaier to prepare which is favorki, so i decided to do it.

yesterday my friends came to me and we celebrated our fat thursday, by doing favorki, it took us 2 hours which it was more fun doing it than eating it, also i decided to make for them something from egyptian sweets ( lo2met el2adi), well it was my first time, it wasn't perfect , but went good and tasted for them better than pounchki we already bougth from shop which i still have it waiting in my kitchen to be eaten, at least no body went to hospital.
lo2met el2adi tasted good for them i think because they don't know the orginal taste, well the most important that they liked it, about favorki it tasted to me like fried bread with castered sugar.
we ate a lot that i feel i can't eat really any more sweets for at least next 6 month, so that meant goodbye to my diet & after carnival a diet is coming- I hope sooooooo.............
